Get around with ease
Waverley is well-connected to the wider region and the rest of the UK. What’s more, the new community is being designed to incorporate a sustainable transport system that allows residents to get around easily using a range of transport options, as well as allowing safe, easy access for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.
Well-connected community
Waverley is within the Rotherham borough and is less than three miles from Sheffield with high-frequency bus services to both. Waverley residents will have rapid access to the M1 motorway, as well as the mainline railway station at Sheffield. Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood Airport can be reached within 30 minutes. The Waverley link road does not form a part of the planning application for the scheme.
Walking and cycling
The development will feature a comprehensive network of bridleways, footpaths and cycle paths, providing clear, direct routes to the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP), Highfield Commercial, Orgreave Square, the waterfront and throughout the development. Pedestrians and cyclists will have priority on all routes, while vehicle access will be restricted in some areas. By linking the community’s cycle routes to those within the AMP and Highfield Commercial areas, it is hoped that people will be encouraged to cycle or walk to work.
Every opportunity will be taken to link the development’s footpaths and bridleways with those in the surrounding countryside and communities, so that Waverley is fully integrated with its neighbours.
Promoting public transport
A new transport interchange facility will be located close to the centre of the development, not far from Orgreave Square. It will be completed early in the development and its location, just a five-minute walk away from most residents, aims to encourage greater use of public transport. The transport interchange will also serve as a transport hub, providing an interchange between existing local services and the community’s public transport loop.
Safer road network
An interconnected network of main roads, minor roads and loop roads will allow easy access to all parts of the development by car, while maximising safety for road users and pedestrians. The main Highfield Lane route that crosses the development from north to south will remain a busy thoroughfare. This was formerly a 60mph road across the Orgreave Colliery site. In the new Waverley community it will pass through a residential area and will become a 30mph zone. It will be realigned and redesigned to encourage drivers to slow down. This road provides direct access to the central Orgreave Square, and will provide a principle route for buses serving the community.
A series of loop roads will form the main traffic circulation routes around the development and will be designed to accommodate bus lanes where required. From these loop roads, minor roads will provide access to residential streets. These roads will be shared surfaces with reduced speed limits.
