Sustainability

A shining example of sustainable development

Waverley is designed to be an exemplary sustainable community. It has been carefully planned to ensure that the size, scale and density of the development will support efficient use of resources and allow the town to be self-sustaining. An integrated approach to energy use, transport systems, water conservation, environmental enrichment, waste management and sustainable land use will deliver a truly sustainable community for the 21st-century.

Reducing energy consumption

All homes built at Waverley will be designed to be as energy efficient as practical. Within the masterplan layout buildings will be orientated to benefit from passive heating and cooling e.g. allowing beneficial solar gain to limit heating, helping to reduce energy consumption and household energy bills. The development also aims to incorporate a phased integration of renewable and low to zero carbon on-site energy production measures. The aim of this strategy is to allow flexibility of energy production methods over the phased implementation of the development. Currently this flexible approach seeks to incorporate not only individual building energy efficiency measures, but also site wide measures. These site wide measures include district heating and in the later phases of development, electricity production via the use of combined heat and power (CHP) energy centres.

Integrated transport network

Extensive footpaths and cycle routes connecting all parts of town’s residential and commercial districts will encourage people to walk or cycle to work. The town’s transport interchange facility will be within a five-minute walk of most households in Waverley. Frequent buses with regular connections to services in the wider region will encourage residents to use public transport. An interchange located at the transport interchange will connect the town with the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system for South Yorkshire. This advanced transport system, using the latest Euro standard vehicles, will provide rapid, direct access to the centres of Rotherham and Sheffield.

Water and waste management

Systems for recycling grey water from sinks, dishwashers, baths and washing machines will be incorporated into buildings where possible. An efficient surface water drainage system will discharge water into the lakes in a controlled manner. The lakes will in turn discharge water into the River Rother at a carefully managed rate.

A comprehensive waste and recycling strategy has been developed for the whole development, with effective household recycling schemes to minimise landfill waste generated by the town.

Enriching the environment

The landscape of Waverley, with its open spaces, parks, woods, lakes and meadows is designed to attract wildlife and dramatically enhance the biodiversity of the area. As well as being an attractive place for wildlife and plants, the town’s human occupants will benefit enormously from easy access to green spaces and lakeland, just minutes from their homes.

A safe, supportive community

Waverley residents will be supported by a host of community, health and recreational services. The streetscape has been designed to reduce crime, with homes overlooking all public and open spaces, providing passive surveillance and crime deterrence. Communal amenities will be well integrated within or close to areas of housing, allowing everyone easy access to the town’s full range of services.
