Breath of fresh air for new development plans
Environmental and ecology proposals included in plans to transform a former coke works and mining site in South Yorkshire, have been welcomed by residents in Brinsworth as a breath of fresh air.
UK Coal wants to redevelop the former open cast site in Waverley near the Advanced Manufacturing Park into a sustainable high density mixed use community, including approximately 4,000 houses, community facilities and green areas.
The development includes improved public access to woodland and wildflower grassland and lakeside areas, which residents including Jean and Peter Jepson say will provide better green space.
The couple have lived near the site at Brinsworth in Rotherham for 31 years and are keen to see the area transformed into a useful and accessible site for local people.
Jean said: We lived here when it was a coke plant. When they burnt the coal at the plant it often smelt like sulphur because of the chemicals, it wasn’t good for the environment, or very pleasant.
When I saw the plans at a consultative meeting I was impressed, especially with the planned green spaces. We often go to Rother Valley but it’s a car ride away. This is on our doorstep....
