A landscape of lakes and rivers
The three interconnected lakes at the south of the development will give the new town a distinctive character and provide exciting opportunities for sport, recreation and leisure. Another watercourse, the River Rother, marks the eastern and northern boundary of the development and provides a distinct habitat for wildlife and a place of tranquillity for local people. Drainage on the redeveloped site has been carefully designed to flow into the lakes and empty into the River Rother at a carefully controlled rate - essential to protect flood-prone areas downstream.
Lakeland for leisure
The town’s three lakes provide a focal point for the whole community. Covering 26 hectares, they have significant potential to contribute to enhancing local ecology and increasing the biodiversity of the development, as well as providing a sport and recreation area for local people.
Landscaping and tree planting around the lakes will enhance the appearance of the area and complement nearby riverside vegetation. Falling within an area of green belt, which has never previously been accessible to the public, the new parkland around the lakes will provide a welcome resource for local people.
Intelligent water management
The masterplan for Waverley includes the development of an extensive drainage network and services strategy. The surface water drainage system (SUDS) has been sensitively designed to offer efficient, effective, long-term and sustainable drainage for the entire development. The gravity-fed system uses the development’s contours to discharge surface water into the town’s three lakes. This reservoir discharges water into the River Rother at a restricted rate agreed with the Environment Agency, ensuring river levels downstream are not raised excessively.
