Breathing spaces for people and wildlife
Greenery and open spaces will be a defining characteristic of the new Waverley town, covering an area of around 90 hectares (222 acres). Green spaces will extend from the parks and woodlands into the streets and public spaces to provide a seamless green network throughout the development. The natural landscape and open spaces will provide an important resource for local people, offering a diverse range of recreational opportunities, from active pursuits to relaxation and contemplation.
Accessible green oasis for everyone
Residents of Waverley will enjoy the privilege of never living more than a five-minute walk away from a green space. Small local parks will be dotted around the community, providing welcome breathing spaces among the built-up areas. Streets will be lined with trees, public spaces will be lavishly planted and the green expanse of Waverley Park will be visible from most parts of the town. The town’s parks and gardens will be linked by pleasant pedestrian routes, often along planted pathways - encouraging people to take recreational walks and providing safe corridors for wildlife.
Highwall Park
The 12.5-hectare Highwall Park will cut a green swath through the development, connecting the transport interchange in the north with the lakes in the south, and bisecting the residential areas of the town. Many households will overlook this broad stretch of parkland.
In contrast with the more natural Waverley Park, Highwall Park will offer a range of sporting and recreational facilities, from football pitches to play areas, set within a beautiful formal landscape. There will be seating areas and plenty of space for picnics and relaxation.
Waverley Park
Located within the green belt at the southern end of the town, Waverley Park will be a vast expanse of natural wild space, comprising native woodland, lakeland, wetland and grassland habitats, with wildflower meadows, footpaths and bridleways.
With 88.6 hectares of open space and 26 hectares of lakes, this park will be a magnet for both residents and wildlife. Overlooked by the grassy mound of Waverley Hill, this enticing landscape will link the new community with its neighbours at an early stage of the development. The park will be designed to increase biodiversity in the area, with a designated wildlife lake. Nature trails and seating areas will allow everyone to get closer to nature.
