A haven for wildlife
The development of Waverley will transform a largely sterile and featureless brownfield site into a haven for wildlife and plants. A combination of lakes, river, parkland, woodland, wetland and meadows will provide diverse habitats for a wide range of species, bringing life, activiy and verdant growth back to this once-upon-a-time barren land.
Rebuilding biodiversity
The bare brownfield site currently has low levels of biodiversity and a series of low-value immature habitats, including a beck, the river corridor, drainage ditches and areas of neutral grassland. Already though there are signs of rejuvenation. Within the developed areas of the Advanced Manufacturing Park there is a patch of grassland that supports breeding skylark, providing a tantalising glimpse of the future potential of this development.
Back to nature
Native trees will be planted throughout the new town, with suitable species selected for streetsides, public spaces, parkland and waterfront areas. The existing remnants of wildlife habitat, particularly along the river, will be reinforced and extended. A network of watercourses and green pathways will provide natural corridors, allowing wildlife and plants to rapidly recolonise the development.
