Stimulating place to relax, play, compete and learn
The Waverley development site incorporates an impressive 90 hectares (222 acres) of green space and recreational areas. From its waterfront promenade to the sweeping expanse of Highwall Park and from its bustling shops and restaurants to inspirational public spaces, Waverley will be a community bursting with places to exercise and play, as well as opportunities to relax and unwind. Whether you like to spend your leisure time windsurfing or walking, cycling or shopping, Waverley offers something for everyone
Out and about
The development will be criss-crossed with bridleways and footpaths that are accessible to all - for walking, jogging and cycling. The lakes provide a host of recreational and sporting options from sailing and windsurfing to swimming and rowing. The lakeside promenade and Orgreave Square areas offer plentiful shopping, eating and entertainment opportunities.
Extensive parkland
Highwall Park will contain areas for formal and information recreation, seating areas, mini-football pitches and play areas for all ages. Many households will directly overlook this park and all will have easy access to it.
Wild spaces
In contrast to the formality of Highwall Park, the vast Waverley Park, which occupies the southern half of the development, will be a more natural area of woodland, wetland, grassland and wildflower meadows - offering countless leisure opportunities. Within the park will be almost 26 hectares of open water in the form of three interconnected lakes. One of these is intended to be a wildlife lake to encourage biodiversity, enabling local people to enjoy wildlife close to their homes. Waverley Hill, adjoining the park, will provide a refreshing viewpoint overlooking the entire Waverley development.
Time to play
Rotherham MBC’s play strategy recognises the need to provide a rich and stimulating environment for young people up to 19 years of age. Waverley has been designed to offer a whole host of play areas and physical activities throughout the new community. There will be play areas in both Waverley and Highwall Parks, and Waverley Park will feature an exciting adventure playground integrated into the surrounding environment.
Local squares, neighbourhood parks and green spaces will feature play elements for children of all ages, while school playgrounds will be open out of hours to supplement play facilities elsewhere. Multi-user games areas will be created in Highwall Park, along with teenage meeting places. Wide residential streets, with speed limits of 10mph, will provide further communal spaces for spontaneous play and recreation.
