Stunning focal point for a new community
At the centre of the new Waverley community, easily accessible from all surrounding residential areas, Orgreave Square is the vibrant heart of the town. It is the focal point for local services, from healthcare and community centres to shops, offices and eating places.
This enticing urban space is divided into three closely linked areas: orchard, urban square and water space.
Orchard:
This paved and gravelled area with a grid of formally planted trees, reminiscent of a Mediterranean plaza, provides a pleasant, green place in which to linger. The area incorporates stop-over bays for buses, while the urban ‘forest’ lessens the impact of through traffic and helps to reduce traffic speeds. The treed square is bordered by a supermarket to the south, health centre and sheltered housing to the west and north and a combined community and heritage centre to the east.
Urban square:
This paved crossroads at the very centre of Waverley is surrounded by a bustling array of shops, cafes, offices and a large hotel, as well as more sheltered housing. To the south the square is left open to the stunning water space. The crossroads forms a slightly raised speed table, designed to slow down traffic transiting this busy area.
Water space:
This is the eye-catching centrepiece of Orgreave Square, giving the heart of Waverley a real ‘wow’ factor and an identity all of its own. It is a large shallow water body crossed by a footbridge and flanked by steps along its sunny northern and eastern sides. It will be an attractive and fun place to relax, meet friends, take a lunch break and enjoy the outdoors. It will be animated by fountains and enhanced by public art, backed by an attractive pavilion housing the combined community and heritage centre.
